Side Gusset Central Seal Pouch — also known as center seal side gusset pouch, pillow pouch with side pleats, or center back seal gusseted pouch — is a hybrid packaging design that combines the manufacturing simplicity of a center seal pouch with the expandable capacity of side gussets.

How It Is Constructed: A single flat film is folded into a tube, and a vertical heat seal is applied exactly down the center of the back panel. Before sealing, the film is pleated inward on both sides to create side gussets (also called side pleats or bellows). When filled, these gussets unfold and expand outward, dramatically increasing the pouch's width and internal volume. The result is a pouch that can hold bulky, irregularly shaped products without tearing or distorting.

Key Structural Features:

  • Center Back Seal: A single, straight seal running vertically down the middle of the rear panel. This minimizes sealant waste and creates a clean, uninterrupted front panel for maximum branding.

  • Expandable Side Gussets: Left and right pleated folds that open like an accordion when filled. Gusset depth typically ranges from 20 mm to 100 mm, depending on target volume.

  • Flat or Stand-Up Bottom: Can be manufactured with a flat bottom seal (for self-standing) or a simple transverse seal (for flat-lay pillow style).

Material Construction: Multi-layer laminates including PET (12 micron), metalized PET, aluminum foil (7–9 micron), BOPP (20–30 micron), and LDPE sealant layer (40–80 micron). Barrier properties can be customized for oxygen transmission rate (OTR) .

Sealing Integrity: The center back seal plus two side gusset seals create a pouch with five sealed seams (bottom, top, center back, left gusset, right gusset). Each seam is independently tested for burst strength, peel strength, and leak resistance critical for air-filled snacks that expand during transit at high altitudes.

Flat Bottom Side Gusset Pouch: Features a sealed flat bottom that allows the pouch to stand upright. Best for coffee, cookies, and pet food (500g–5kg). Combines side gusset expansion with shelf-ready stability.

Pillow Style Side Gusset Pouch: No bottom gusset pouch lays flat when empty. Used for vending machine chips, single-serve snacks, and lightweight bulk items (100g–1kg). 

Side Gusset Pouch with Zipper: Features a press-to-close zipper below the top seal. Allows consumers to open, use partially, and reseal. Popular for pet treats, dried fruits, nuts, and cookies (200g–2kg).
